“These People Aren’t Just Rich, They’re Crazy Rich!”

by Ryleigh Gibbel

“Crazy Rich Asians,” directed by Jon M. Chu, is the first Hollywood movie in 25 years to have an all-Asian cast.

Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) is a Chinese-American economics professor who falls in love with Nick Young (Henry Golding), a wealthy bachelor from Singapore. Together, they travel back to Nick’s hometown to attend his best friend’s wedding. Along the way, Rachel learns that Nick’s family is crazy rich, crazy sophisticated, and crazy overcritical. Rachel and Nick’s love is tested by old friends, unapproving family, and newly-surfaced secrets. But love will always prevail in the end…or can it?

This movie is a well made romantic comedy that shows the importance of family and sticking with customs of good luck and fortune. It also shows how social class plays within society and how easy it is to damage one’s reputation. Most importantly, this movie shows the importance in friendship and the cliché of always following one’s heart. For example, in the movie, Rachel and Nick are faced with choosing their love or Nick’s family values; Rachel was nowhere near reaching these values. If they were to follow their heart, then they could be together forever, but if he chooses his family, then Nick may never see Rachel again.

This movie was pleasing to watch. The plot caught me in a way that I held on to every moment. There were times when I was laughing, times when I was tearing up, and times when I was saying, “you go girl.” The characters were relatable, and every action they made kept me on my seat. The love between Rachel and Nick was inspiring and truly beautiful. Overall, this movie is a must-watch.
