Dungeons & Beavers: How a Tabletop Roleplaying Game has Captured the Imagination

by Brian Bedenbender

Dungeons & Dragons the game where storytelling, math and acting combine to form one of the greatest tabletop games ever made and in the past five years it has seen a boom in popularity. But, when people think of Dungeons & Dragons there is a tendency to think of killing demons, looting dragon hordes and saving princesses. That is not all that happens, as I found out when I sat in on a session put on by a group of Graham students that there is also arguing with alchemists, falling in love with assassins and celebrating at taverns after a long day of adventuring. Many on campus have seen the memes or watching the smash sensation “Critical Role” where a bunch of nerdy voice actors play Dungeons & Dragons and are considering starting a game of their own but, if your still on the fence let the next paragraph sell you on this grand game.

As two students in good academic standing Senior secondary history  Jonathan Shaw and Theatre major Jason Wasson tell it, these grand adventures are common in any good Dungeons & Dragon campaign. So, what was the best moment for the my two veteran Dungeon and Dragon players? Shaw’s best moment was a time when he was playing a bard these masters of wine, women and song are more than capable of getting into shenanigans shown by the time when Shaw’s group was transporting a group of refugees to safety. They had stopped at a tavern only to find out that the owner was gouging the refugees so what did Shaw do. He cast invisibility on himself and stole the tavern owner’s strongbox full of gold, only to be caught chased all the way through the tavern and town Shaw escaped and swapped out the gold for ball bearings only to  find out the next morning a bunch of bandits had come, and they wanted their protection money that was no longer their this meant that Shaw and his team of adventurers had to now save the corrupt tavern keep. If robbing from the greedy is not your style perhaps Wasson’s best moment in Dungeons & Dragons is more your style “We had killed this bandit leader and we had taken his head as proof and the bandits were coming down this road… and we set up this ambush plan… Tim stood out in the middle of this road with this head bandit leaders head puppeteering it… ‘What Frank’s right here and he’s telling you not to do anything’ and one of the bandits shot a crossbow bolt at him and it hit the head… Tim looked at the head and Tim said ‘Franks going to kill you for that.’

If these stories have you craving the life of an adventurer, but you don’t know how to get started, don’t worry. Wasson a dungeon master has the solution to your adventuring needs “I’m going to be hanging flyers up with all the information needed for those who want to start a game to get into contact with each other.” So grab some dice and start checking the boards on campus because Dungeons & Dragons is about to take over the college and you won’t want to miss out on the adventure of your life.
