Bringing back vintage Blackburn style with the Logos of the past

by Brian Bedenbender

Fashion is cyclical; what’s ugly and out of date today will be new and the height of fashion tomorrow, so why doesn’t our esteemed college make better use of the nearly 200 years worth of logos to its full advantage? Merchandise and even alternate uniforms would be a great way to celebrate the storied history of Blackburn College while letting students show a bit of individuality in the way they support their college. Perhaps the symbols of Blackburn’s past were poorly designed or outdated in some way that makes them incapable of representing the spirit of the current faculty and students. Can the logos and mascots of the past still resonate with the students and faculty of the modern era.  Before any voting could begin I had to narrow down to a reasonable number nearly 200 years’ worth of logos and mascots that was no easy task.

Dakota Clevenger a history major in good academic standing and Cataloging and Reference Librarian Lynn Armstrong had their own opinions. Armstrong was not as much of a fan of the newer Barney the Beaver as Clevenger, stating, “I’ve always liked the kinder and gentler Barney. The happier Barney.” The three options will be between three logos. The three people Logo this Blackburn logo would be a great choice for any student or faculty member working in the community it feels like a company or a logo of a charity. The other two logos are more traditional school logos, one is a blocky Blackburn logo from the 1970’s and was my and one of my interviewees’ favorites: “I actually really like the font… it’s not too flashy but it’s distinct.” He stated he would definitely buy merchandise with this logo on it. Then there was the swoop logo this one is very similar to the logo that is in use today but with a swoop on the K instead of the familiar blocky K. While not being stylistically very different this logo feels more welcoming to me and would be nice to use during welcoming ceremonies and other similar events. Now that the choices have been explained all that’s left is the voting. The poll will be held at the Blackburn twitter account and you can choose which vintage logo to potentially bring back to life.
