What’s the Deal, Ding?

by Athena Mata

Why has ding gone classical?  Everyone who has visited ding this school year has noticed that they only play classical music now.  Last year, ding employees were allowed to play any music genre as long as it was appropriate. There was a complaint by a customer about inappropriate music this year, forcing ding to play classical music.  Classical music is not the only option of music to be appropriate. There are clean versions of music and certain stations that are more appropriate based on the genre or the artist.

My real problem is, why has that freedom been taken away?  There is a setting on pandora that filters out inappropriate songs and spans over every station, meaning that we should be allowed to play any genre of music while still being appropriate.  Some crew heads can frequent the office to check and make sure that the music is appropriate and change the station or skip the song if it is not.

The music matters in both the dining area and in the back for the workers.  Most of the workers would prefer to listen to songs that they know and can sing along to while they work.  This can put workers in a better mood and make them more likely to work harder. I know that was the case for me when I worked at ding.  I have asked a few current workers at ding and they agree that music would help the productivity within the ding department. Most students who dine at ding would also prefer to listen to music that they are more familiar with.

Restaurants typically cater to the preferences of their main target market and create an environment that those customers would prefer.  Ding is the cafeteria on campus and is primarily meant for the students on campus and should create an environment that the students will enjoy.  We should be able to play music freely, but still be appropriate for the community when they do visit ding.
