Netflix and Not Chill

As of January of 2019, Netflix will no longer be able to be downloaded through the Wii Shop Channel to stream through the Wii. Why? Because the Nintendo Switch came out a about a year and a half ago and no one buys Wiis or any of the accessories anymore. There are even rumors around on the internet that the Wii Shop Channel would be taken off of the Wii U as well.

For those who may be unaware, the Wii Shop Channel is like the Google Play or the iTunes store where users can download apps and channels to access through the console. On July 31, 2018, Nintendo announced the discontinuation of Netflix channel option because of the releases of the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. The Wii U does still have the Netflix channel option available; however, it might be removed as well. The Switch does not have a Netflix option, but it does have a YouTube streaming option that is pretty popular with the Switch users.

The Wii was released on Nov. 19, 2006. Given that it was released 12 years ago, it makes sense that not many people buy the accessories and games, much less the actual console itself, anymore. Nintendo has actually cut back on production of the Wii accessories because the profit of the newer consoles and games. But not having Netflix on the Wii will be a drawback for some. I still use a Wii for my Netflix streaming. I can buy an HDMI cord, hook that to my television and stream Netflix through my computer, but those are a few extra steps that I, or someone else, would have to make to watch Netflix. This would be a good solution, but only if the viewer has an HDMI compatible computer. Mac computers usually need an adapter, so that could be extra money to be spent. With the Wii, I just have to turn the television and Wii on and call it a day.

Taking the Netflix streaming option off of the Wii, in the long run, does make sense for the company. Current users that already have the Netflix channel downloaded on the console will still be able to stream. New users however, will not be.
