Do’s and Dont’s:

by Athena Mata

Illinois ranked 11th out of the 50 states for the highest number of cases of human trafficking with 193 reports in 2017.  Human trafficking abduction cases have been gradually increasing over the years, for example, there were 3,272 cases in 2012 and 8,524 cases in 2017.  There are certain tactics that predators may use to lure their victim into vulnerable situations. One of the main ways to avoid these situations is to be alert, particularly when you are alone, and to be aware of the tactics that have been used before.  Morrison Fraser, the head of Blackburn campus security, has covered this topic many times in student assemblies and he cannot stress enough the importance of staying alert.

One of the new tactics being used by abductors is placing something under your windshield wipers and when you go to investigate, they strike.  Fraser recommended to get into your car and lock the doors and drive to a safe location to remove the item on the windshield. Another way to avoid this is to look around your car when leaving to see if there is a car parked near yours with someone sitting in the car. If a car is on the driver’s side, you can get in through the passenger’s side and immediately lock the doors. Another option is to go back into the building you came from to find or call for a security guard or a police officer to escort you to your car. Your kindness can and will be taken advantage of, so be aware of who you help and make sure you are in a populated and safe area.

There have even been reported cases of people being abducted right from their front porch. In these cases, the individual was home alone and there were noises coming from outside.  Two examples of these noises are the sound of a pipe breaking outside or a baby’s cries. When the individual goes outside to investigate, they are kidnapped. These situations are extremely dangerous. Spread the word to friends and family so that everyone can be aware of these situations. Be careful and safe when going to new and unfamiliar places. Blackburn security patrols to keep you safe on campus and is always available in the event of an emergency.  For emergencies, Blackburn security can be reached at (217) 825-3042. Always remember that it is better to be safe rather than sorry.
