Truth or Dare

by Bailee McCarthy

On April 13, Blumhouse Productions released the movie “Truth or Dare,” a thriller and horror film. For not typically liking these particular movie genres, I give it two thumbs up. It had its moments that were not very realistic, but every movie has that. Overall, it was a very good movie, and I recommend it.

In the film, college students Olivia, Markie, Penelope, Lucas, Tyson, and Brad adventure to Rosarito, Mexico, for spring break. While there, Olivia goes to the bar, where a fellow student, Ronnie, harrasses her until another guy steps in. He introduces himself as Carter; then he and Olivia talk at the bar until the group meets up before leaving. As the group expresses they do not want to go back to the hotel just yet, Carter takes the group, including Ronnie, to an abandoned mansion. There, they gather chairs, sit in a circle and begin a harmless game of “Truth or Dare.” As the game proceeds on, the group members single out Carter, who has not been asked to do a truth or a dare. Carter reveals a secret about the game: how it “follows you.” He suggests that the group should get out of Mexico, making sure not to tell a lie or refuse a dare—or they will die. With that, the group quickly packed up and left Mexico the next day.

As the game continues, the group is faced with consequences that challenge their strength of friendship. There are two parts of the movie that the viewers are shocked by. With minor details that are stereotypical horror films, the film itself possessed great qualities to not lose a viewer’s interest. Rotten Tomatoes, an online rater for trending movies and television shows, gave “Truth or Dare” a 15% on the Tomatometer. Will you play Truth or Dare?
