The Mystery Necessities

by Galaxie Vail

Everyone forgets something at home their freshman year, or forgets to buy a necessity for dorm life. It’s practically a tradition. But what about the things that nobody expects to have to bring with them? Here’s a list of things you never expected to need during college.

  • Cleaning utensils: Whether it be a broom and dustpan or Lysol and cleaning rags, most people don’t think about cleaning supplies while packing for college.
  • Ziplock bags: Ziplock bags can be a very important tool for surviving college, but they are also one of the things freshmen tend to not remember to pack
  • Tupperware: Tupperware is an essential part of college life. They can hold leftover foods, school supplies or smelly socks that haven’t been washed in months because they are crucial to winning the big game. Tupperware is truly one of the most important and forgotten items while packing.
  • A water purifier: This is something most freshmen don’t even think about. Water on campus sometimes doesn’t taste the best, but with a water purifier, water on campus is suddenly as clean as a whistle. But who thinks of bringing a water purifier to campus?
  • Shower shoes: Nobody wants foot diseases.
  • A stapler: Not everybody has access to a stapler while printing essays and homework assignments, so a personal stapler is a great idea to have on your desk. Even a mini stapler will work as long as it gets the job done.
  • Ethernet cable: When the internet just isn’t working fast enough for that important video that just has to be watched, an ethernet cable helps your computer run as fast as lightning.
  • A Crockpot: Sometimes going to Ding is just not worth it; that’s when a crockpot comes in handy. It can cook all kinds of things; just google “crockpot” and then the food you want.
  • A Tool set: Most incoming freshmen don’t think they will need a basic tool set, but hammers, pliers and wrenches come in handy more often than you think.
  • A dry-erase board calendar: You have no idea how good an investment this is. It works wonders for quick schedule adjustments and to let your roommate know where you are if they need you.
  • Power strips: Four plugins for two people in this day and age are not nearly enough, but some younger people don’t even think about them, much less pack one for college.

Whether you prepared for college for weeks before moving in, or you are still making panicked Wal-Mart trips for things you had missed while packing, a list is always a good things to help remember forgotten college supplies.
