Summer Work

by Rachel Burke

This summer, like every other summer, Blackburn College will be offering work opportunities. Some might not know the extent or the details of these opportunities. A majority of the work needed will be in Physical Plant and Campus Services, but Dean of Work Angie Morenz said there are a lot of office positions available as well. They are still finalizing the list.

Morenz said the summer jobs are very similar to the jobs during the school year in terms of helping the staff work on what she calls “summer projects.” Students working over the summer make $9.00 per hour and the hours vary depending on the job. The cleaning crew and campus maintenance will start work earlier in the day in order to beat the heat, while office positions will most likely start work into the evenings. Students working in athletics and keeping the gym open will stay at work later as well. “On average,” Morenz said, “the jobs will run during the regular work day.”

The cost of living on campus over the summer depends on multiple factors. Morenz said, “For those students working and sharing a room with another student, their fees are minimal.” She also said they take in factors regarding how engaged the student is on campus, like whether they are working, doing an internship, or attending classes. Another thing that is factored in is whether the student gets a double or single room.

Summer work starts on May 14, the Monday after graduation, and the end date will be made based on department need and other factors. There are still some decisions being made about the summer work program, but overall, it will run as it always does.
