“An Unforgettable Experience”

by Abigail Miller

Magician Daniel Martin came to Blackburn and performed on Feb. 22, 2019. This was not the first time he has visited Blackburn. Martin has been practicing magic since he was six years old. He started off pickpocketing because his family was poor. That same year his grandpa took him to a jail to teach him a lesson. Martin said “little did he know that it was the best thing ever.”

The first act began with Martin turning senior criminal justice major Trent Allen’s can of Pepsi into Orange Crush. At first it was the hilarious act of making the Pepsi disappear. That was the only fake trick that night. Martin sent Allen back to his seat with the cup, but before Allen got there Martin said, “he looks thirsty, come back.” He then held the empty can of Pepsi up and pours Orange Crush from the once empty Pepsi can.

The next act consisted of Martin guessing which celebrity sophomore double major in legal studies and organizational leadership Kaitlyn Mitchum was thinking of out of an entire book filled with celebrities. He did this by reading her facial expressions as well as her body language when he would ask questions about each celebrity. In the end he shocked the crowd again when he pulled out an envelope with the mugshot of Justin Bieber. Who was the secret celeb that Mitchum had chosen from the book for Martin to guess.

Martin then pickpocketed junior accounting and business management major Elijah Meyer. Martin says he’s a good pickpocketer because he likes to make all of his victims, Meyer in this particular scenario, as uncomfortable as possible. Not only did he succeed in pickpocketing Meyer, but he took the items out of the wallet and returned the wallet to its place without being seen.

Then came sophomore elementary education major Taylor Williams and her little sister Maxine with the silver dollar trick. Martin had Maxine hold up a metal bucket over her head while he moved over to Williams. He held a silver dollar before her twice before “tossing” them into the bucket over Maxine’s head across the stage. This would be normal of course if he had tossed them. The silver dollars disappeared from his hands and reappeared in the bucket.

After that he opened a box in which he had mailed to himself from “five days in the future.” In this box was another box that was striped. In the striped box was a flash drive with a video on it that had all the audience made decisions in it. These decisions consisted of the type of drink the Pepsi turned into, what celebrity was chosen, and more. There was no way he could have guessed them before the show.

It was an amazing to watch the show and the audiences reactions to the tricks Martin performed. With his impressive performance this semester it’s not to big of a stretch to say he will most likely be invited back. Though Blackburn saw his performance not to long ago, he’s sure to have a few more tricks up his sleeve.
