Pickles’ Top Picks: Summer 2017

by Caleb Long

Here’s one last hand-picked playlist from Pickles himself. Have a good summer, folks! It’s been a pleasure making these playlists for you.

By the way, this “trash” playlist isn’t for hackjobs. It’s for fans of good music.

Thundercat – “Oh Sheit It’s X”

  • Let’s start this playlist out with something upbeat and funky. On this cut from 2013’s “Apocalypse”, our boy Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner is recalling his time spent on MDMA, inviting you to join the fun. This track is sure to get the party started, no matter where you are.
    • NOTE: The ‘Burnian and Pickles’ Top Picks do not support and advise against the use of drugs.

Kendrick Lamar – “DNA”

  • Get ready for a heavy hitter. Kendrick Lamar’s new album “DAMN.” just came out a couple weeks ago, and I think it is pretty safe to say that it is already a hip-hop classic. On “DNA”, Kendrick’s rhymes are more potent than ever, and that beat change in the middle of the song will blow your face off.

Pond – “Paint Me Silver”

  • I saw these guys in Chicago a couple weeks ago. The whole show was great, but when they played this track from 2017’s “The Weather”, it turned into a party! Everybody in the room started dancing. I hope that this slick piece of synth pop does the same for you.

Chance The Rapper – “Blessings”

  • Here’s something with a gospel tinge to it. On this cut from 2016’s “Coloring Book,” Chance gets real, talking about his relationship with God and giving thanks for the blessings that he has been given. This track is sure to provide chill and positive vibes to your day.

Eurythmics – “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”

  • I let my best friend Shelby pick this track for me, and she didn’t disappoint. This cut of classic cool from synth-pop duo Eurythmics is just as catchy and fun now as it was in 1983. This one is perfect for the dancefloor or for those summer drives with your windows down.

Tame Impala – “The Less I Know The Better”

  • I finally got around to picking a track from my favorite band, Tame Impala. Dancing and having fun seems to be a theme in this playlist, and this track is no exception. “The Less I Know The Better” feels like it is straight out of a 1970s discotheque, with its funky beat and groovy bass line.

Kendrick Lamar – “LOVE (feat. ZACHARI)”

  • Let’s slow it down a little bit. I don’t usually include two tracks from the same artist on a playlist, especially if they are from the same album. However, I have fallen in love with this cut from 2017’s “DAMN.” This track is sexy and smooth, which is perfect for you and that special someone on those cool summer nights.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone”

  • Maybe you’re in the mood for something a little more Michael Jackson-esque. New Zealand psych-rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra have got you covered with this vintage sounding cut from their 2015 album, “Multi-Love”. This one is sure to pick the party back up and get people moving.

Mini Mansions – “Mirror Mountain”

  • For those looking for something a little more rocking, might I suggest Mini Mansions. This track is insane, with a manic breakdown after each verse that segues into an unstable, out of control ending. This one is sure to cause excitement and turn some heads.

Miguel – “Waves (Tame Impala Remix)”

  • I’ll close this out with something sexy and upbeat. Rhythm and blues artist Miguel teams up with Tame Impala to create a beautiful, psychedelic pop masterpiece. This one, with good reason, reminds me of watching the sunrise on the beach. Hopefully, you’ll find yourself on a beach when you hear it.
