How to be a Dorm Guru

by Athena Mata

Have you been considering changing your living arrangements? Are you struggling with deciding if you want to room with another person or have a single dorm? Maybe you want to try getting an apartment off campus and becoming a commuter? Well, here are some questions to ask yourself to help you make your final decision:

The Stoddard parlor is a shared community space that isn’t available in an apartment.

  • Are you set on living on campus for the duration of your time at Blackburn?
  • Are you an extrovert or an introvert?
    • Many extroverts rely on human connection and may be more suited to having a roommate.
    • Many introverts tend to do fine on their own and may not want a roommate.
  • Do you share well?
    • Roommates tend to share a lot of things including a fridge, TV and anything else that both roommates agree on.
    • You also are sharing one room, and it may be difficult to get alone time if you need it.
  • Do you need your own space?
    • It is hard to have your own space in a dorm room with a roommate, but maybe an apartment will work. In an apartment you can have your own room, but shared living areas.
  • Do you want to have guests over? Does your roommate like having guests over?
  • Do you need someone to help motivate you daily to get your tasks accomplished?
  • Do you like to have a clean living area?
    • Discuss with your roommate beforehand about cleaning and tidiness.
  • Do you go to sleep early or late?
  • Can you compromise or do things have to go your way?
  • Do you like to study in your room or do you like to study somewhere else?
  • What is most cost efficient; can you afford to live in a single or an apartment?
    • For an apartment, you will have to provide your own food.
  • Do you have a car?
    • For an apartment you will most likely want to drive to school.
  • Do you want to go home for extended breaks such as winter break and summer break?
    • Renting an apartment means staying for the full year, and you are less likely to be able to go home during long breaks.
