Say Goodbye to Pokemon Go and Hello to Wizards Unite

by Ashley Thompson

During the summer of 2016 “Pokemon Go” was launched. This game swept the nation and had people scouring the streets in search of the next Pokemon. In the first month, there were over one million downloads of the game, according to the Business of Apps. Through this virtual reality gaming app, adults and children alike became the Pokemon trainers they had always dreamed of. I was among those who spent part of the summer of 2016 walking the streets in search of the elusive monsters.

Well, move over “Pokemon Go,” because Harry Potter Go is coming to the app store. This new game was announced last month, and fans of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world are buzzing about “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.” This will be one of the first apps based on the world of “Harry Potter.”

Niantic, the creators of “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite,” has given some insight into what the game will entail. Just like the “Pokemon Go” game, users will be able to collect different items from the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Users will go on adventures to collect spells, discover magical creatures and mysterious artifacts and collect iconic characters from the world of Harry Potter. The game will work similarly to “Pokemon Go”; you will have to physically travel to find different objects from the wizarding world. Whether that be walking the streets of your town, exploring the big city or traveling around the globe in search of everything “Harry Potter,” you will be just as captivated with this game as you were with “Pokemon Go.”

I don’t know about you, but I have waited for a game like this to show up in the app store ever since “Pokemon Go” lost its novelty. That summer, I played the game all of the time—while riding in the car, walking down the streets of my hometown in Illinois and even while on vacation in Arkansas. With all of the hype surrounding just the announcement of a Harry Potter Go game, I can only imagine what the actual game will entail. I truly hope that “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite” will live up to what the creators have announced so far. It sounds like fun, and being a fan of “Harry Potter,” it makes me even more excited about this game in the wizarding world.

Although the exact release date has not yet been released, “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite” will be showing up in the app stores sometime in 2018. Until then, Potterheads, including myself, will be eagerly waiting for the highly anticipated game.
