Bird is the Word

In early December 2018, Netflix released an original film titled “Bird Box,” which was inspired by Josh Malerman’s novel. The science fiction film was a big hit, with over 45 million accounts streaming it within the first week of being released, according to Netflix. The film follows Malorie (Sandra Bullock), who does everything she can to protect her two kids from a mysterious entity as they take the treacherous three day trip up the river to a safe haven full of other survivors. The only catch is that their eyes must be covered in order to survive because the entity causes people who see it to commit suicide.

I enjoyed the film and recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the supernatural. It is classified under the drama and thriller genres on Netflix. I am normally not a fan of thriller movies, but I was able to watch this movie without looking away and hiding under the covers. I really enjoyed the casting, Bullock specifically was a really good choice for the role of Malorie.

The only criticism I have is that the viewers never see the mysterious entity that causes the world to go into post-apocalyptic conditions. The director, Susanne Bier, did have the entity filmed, but it was deleted in post production. If the producers kept the entity in the film, then it would have achieved more of a horror genre that would have been interesting. Regardless, I recommend this movie because it is not crazy scary, but it is still a thriller for any scary movie fans.
