U.S. Government Shutdown is Monstrous and Perverse

by Jameela Brown

I am sure that by now you have heard about the government shutdown, unless you live under a rock. Your 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, would not compromise on the funding for border security thus, causing a government shutdown in December of 2018. He cannot get the Democrats to agree to fund a wall for the border that we share with Mexico. Trump decided that there was a need for a great wall to protect America. Actually, he wants to “protect” our southern border against illegal immigrants. He makes an abundance of different arguments as to why we need a wall, but they have not been acknowledged or accepted.

This government shutdown is truly insane. Who in their right mind has a tantrum and completely shuts the government down? Trump, that is who. The government was shutdown for 35 days, surpassing the 21 days held by former president Clinton in 1955 during his first term. I cannot say that I disagree with some of Trump’s ideas, but I do disagree with how he is going about it. Throwing fits and insulting other politicians on Twitter is not the way to go, and it will get him nowhere. I think that if Trump would make his arguments logically, he would be better off.

In Trump’s Immigration Policy speech, he said, “Illegal immigration hurts American workers, burdens American taxpayers, and undermines public safety, and places enormous strain on our local schools, hospitals, and communities in general, taking precious resources away from the poorest Americans who need them most.” He says all of this as if he has not hurt our country in the same ways. This shutdown has burdened taxpayers and the IRS, he has “drafted” police in his immigration shutdown, which undermines public safety, he has most certainly put a strain on our schools, hospitals, communities and let’s not forget that he has put a strain on the people who need government assistance the most. Trump does not realize that while trying to justify the need for the wall, he has also contradicted his argument in the process.

Your president believes that this country should be left for “Americans” but does not realize that our country was built by immigrants. Trump believes that shutting down the government for a wall is okay. In doing so, he has left a trail of pain, one that he claims he is trying to protect us from. The government was reopened on Jan. 25 temporarily for three weeks. The time is now approaching. This government shutdown had no real reason behind it except that Trump is your president.
