Super Bowl LIII

The Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots faced off against each other on Sunday, Feb. 3rd in the 53rd annual Super Bowl. The Patriots won the game with a score of 13-3, winning their sixth Super Bowl.

The first quarter started off slow for both teams, and neither team was able to score any points for the entire quarter. The Patriots had an opportunity for a field goal, but their kicker, Stephen Gostkowski missed the 46-yard field goal. The Patriots’ quarterback, Tom Brady’s first pass attempt was intercepted by the Rams’ Cory Littleton. At the end of the quarter, Brady had 84 passing yards and the Rams’ quarterback, Jared Goff, had 17 passing yards.

The first points were scored by the Patriots during the second quarter with Gostkowski scoring three points from a 42-yard field goal. Those were the only points scored in the second quarter. At this point in the game, Brady had 160 passing yards and Goff had 52 passing yards. The times of possession of the ball for the Patriots were 19 minutes and 52 seconds, and the Rams had possession of the ball for 10 minutes and 8 seconds.

In the third quarter, only three points were scored total, and they were scored by the Rams’ Kicker, Greg Zuerlein, who scored a 53-yard field goal to tie up the game. Zuerlein scored the first field goal from over 50 yards in the Super Bowl in 15 years. The ending score of this quarter was 3-3. The Rams’ punter, Johnny Hekker, now holds the record for the longest punt in Super Bowl history with a 65-yard punt. At this point in the game, it became the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history and became the first Super Bowl to have no touchdowns scored within the first three quarters.

The fourth quarter is when the Patriots scored the first touchdown of the game, springing them into the lead. The Patriots continued to score after that by making the extra point as well after the touchdown and successfully making a field goal later on in the quarter. The Patriots scored a total of 10 points during this quarter and ended the game with a score of 13-3. Brady had a total of 262 passing yards, and Goff had a total of 229 passing yards.

An honorable mention is the Puppy Bowl that occured on the same day and team Ruff beat team Fluff with a score of 59-51.
