Its spooky season!  So if you want to spice up your Halloween season by visiting nearby haunted locations, then here are a few options for you. Then these local haunts are a few suggestions outside of Carlinville that will not have you spending a bunch of money for gas. Every location in this article is in Illinois and within 60 miles of Carlinville Ill.  Some of these locations are open to the public, but most require you to schedule a tour.

Cheney Mansion: This mansion is located in Jerseyville, Ill. and is reportedly haunted. It was built in 1913 and has its fair share of ghost stories and unusual happenings. One of the more reported supernatural occurrences is the apparition of Ms. Dorothy, a nursemaid who roams the hallways. She is also seen in her room, which still bears her name. People have reported hearing noises in the house when no one else is in the house, chairs moving on their own and the unexplained smell of perfume when no one else is around or wearing perfume.  

Lee-Baker-Hodge’s House: This house is located in Carrollton, Ill. and it was built in the early 1830s. There are reports of two children spirits roaming this house; one mainly resides in a bedroom, and the other child disappears right as it reaches the kitchen door. Witnesses have reported disembodied voices, odd sounds, bright lights and footsteps.

Three Mile House: Located in Edwardsville, Ill., this area is a hotspot for the paranormal. For a long time, is was an inn and is believed to have been a stop for the underground railroad. It burned down in 1985, but you can still visit the area where it stood. There have been reports of orbs of light and shadow figures spotted around this area.  

Milton Schoolhouse: The Milton Schoolhouse is located in Alton, Ill. and it was built in 1904. There have been sightings of figures, belongings disappearing, footsteps, unexplained noises and of a girl named Mary roaming the building.  

McPike Mansion: This mansion is located in Alton, Ill. and is famous for being shown on the TV show “Scariest Places on Earth.” People have reported apparitions being seen in the hallways, and children’s laughter is often heard throughout the building.  

Alton Cemetery: This cemetery is located in Alton, Ill. and is said to have many different ghosts; the two whose names we know are Lucy Haskell and Elijah P. Lovejoy. They both have been sighted in areas around their respective monuments.  

Lebanon Road: This road is also called the “Seven Gates to Hell” and it is located in Collinsville, Ill. It is said that if you pass through all seven bridges, reaching the final bridge right at midnight, you will be transported to hell. The area is said to be guarded by hounds with glowing red or green eyes.
