Sink Or Swim Baby

by Kaitlyn Mitchum

The Administrative Office has just recently invited 2017 graduate of Blackburn College Lisa Knight and 2014 graduate Ashley Williams to work as traveling admissions counselors. In addition to Williams’ counseling position, she also takes on the role as admissions social media coordinator. Williams has worked for the department for about a week longer than Knight. Both women say that parts of the job are difficult but add that the Blackburn staff do a good job of keeping them on track.

“They don’t expect you to just jump in and accept all of it and know what you’re doing,” commented Williams.

As traveling admissions counselors, both are expected to bring new students in and teach them about the ins and outs at Blackburns. Knight said, “It’s not that everything comes super easy, but you have to figure out the puzzle pieces.” Knight also is not a new face on campus; she knows all of the professors, staff and students, “I still go and work out with my friends; it’s nice!”

Knight admits, “I had no admissions experience, so I had to get used to all of that,” while Williams adds, “It’s a lot of data, you just have to make sure you’re pulling in what you need and not overwhelming yourself.” Both women came to the conclusion that working at Blackburn is the “right choice” for them due to the familiarity and the warm environment the college and staff provides.

“It is a sink or swim process; you do jump in and you just try everything, but they’re going to make sure you don’t fall on your face,” said Knight
