Department Involvement – Technology Services

by Bailee McCarthy

One of the many work departments that Blackburn College has is Technology Services. This department focuses on computers, printers, student portals, the wifi and much more. Haley Crider, Technology Services Manager, gave information about the department via email.

“The lab techs are the ones responsible for the lab. If any student needs help they are there to help them the best they can. They keep the lab stocked with supplies that may be needed. They also keep the lab nice and clean for when students come in to use it,” said Crider. She also added that most of the workers that students see on the day to day are the lab techs; they are the ones responsible for the lab. Of course, there are five student workers who are “behind the scenes, such as two software technicians, two data center technicians, and one computer-aided manufacturing, or CAM.” For those who may not know, CAM is an application which uses software to facilitate and automate manufacturing processes. “These five students work closely with a supervisor and work on various projects throughout campus dealing with anything from routers to printers and copiers to working on the student portal,” said Crider.

Crider admitted, “I honestly don’t think any job is most important here on campus. I believe each job here is unique and each job is crucial to how we run as a campus, but no job is most important,” she said. She went on to say that “[Each department] is a piece to a big puzzle and if one falls then the puzzle does not get finished.”

Crider said that the best way she would recruit workers, would be “just apply and have a good interview.” She said that had no technology knowledge, however, she was willing to learn whatever she needed to do the job correctly. She advises students to do the same. “You do not need to know anything about computers to work here. Anything you need to know for the lab can be easily taught,” she said. She also said that if there is something that the department wants a worker to know, the department would teach them the skills they need to be successful.
