Department Involvement – Campus Services

by Bailee McCarthy

Blackburn is one of seven work colleges in the United States.  Of the seven, Blackburn is the only student managed work college.  Over the years, Blackburn has shaped their work program to form around the students’ majors and minors.  But, there are still work departments that students don’t really appreciate, so to speak. One of those departments is Campus Services, or CS for short.  But what if all the negativity could be taken away so that a student isn’t degraded for working in one of the most important departments?

Campus services is basically the janitorial work of the school.  The workers are assigned to two hour shifts between six in the morning and two in afternoon.  Within the two hours, they are divided into groups, lead by a crew head, to go clean a building on campus – whether that’s a residence hall or an academic building.  Now one could imagine the negative comments that are said about CS, given that they have to clean toilets. In a way, campus services is probably the most important department on campus – without them, no bathroom on campus would have toilet paper.  Ursa-Minor Matlock, the current manager, was able to give some insight about the department via email.
