Blackburn Students Show Off Talents

by Madison Deslaurier

During homecoming week, students displayed their talents on stage at Blackburn’s Got Talent. The show was hosted by the Blackburn College Department of Music and Theatre and the Office of Student Engagement. Performers sang songs, played instruments, danced and entertained. Capital City Improv performed at the end of the show before votes were finalized.

The audience voted for the top three best performances while Capital City Improv was performing at the end. John-Brady Warden was voted first place for his piano playing. Second place went to Raven Brooks, and third place was awarded to Brooks and Mia Edwards’ duet performance.

Senior psychology major Tyla Ross participated in the dance club, and she had a solo performance where she sang “Butterflies” by Alicia Keys. Ross has been singing since she was in the fourth grade. “At one point in my life, I wanted to be a professional singer,” she admitted. She chose the song “Butterflies” because it sounded different to her, and she liked that.

Junior communications and business management double major Ally Fowler sang and played guitar to the song “Diary of Jane” by Breaking Benjamin. Fowler has been playing guitar for two years. “I have fun times playing my guitar and want to continue playing,” she said. “Diary of Jane” is her favorite song to play on the guitar. Fowler has experience with doing talent shows since high school, and she plans on performing in more.

Senior creative writing major Jazilyn Colon performed in the dance club. Colon is currently the president of dance club. She enjoys dancing to any kind of music and has performed in three talent shows. “While the talent show performances were nerve racking, I still enjoyed all of them, especially this year’s talent show,” she said.

Freshman piano performance major John-Brady Warden played the piano to “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2” by Franz Liszt. Warden has played piano for three years and has always been interested in music. He started off with online lessons and then private lessons. Warden came to Blackburn to study piano performance and to perform. “Music is a part of me,” he said, “I never thought I could make it my life, but I chose to.” He had to cut parts out of the fifteen minute song, but students still loved it enough to give him first place for best performance.

After every student performance, the audience was so supportive. There was one attendee that kept shouting words of encouragement after each performance. Overall, there were very positive reviews about the show, and everyone left smiling.
