Beavers Back on Track

by Jordan Wood

When the Blackburn women’s volleyball took to the court on Saturday Oct. 14, they looked to bounce out of a dry spell — one in which they dropped eight consecutive matches. Prior to the contest, the Beavers’ last win came on Sept. 16 against St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opponent, Iowa Wesleyan University, so there seemed to be no better way for Blackburn to get back on a winning path than in a rematch against the Tigers.

In the first set of the best-of-five match, the Beavers came out firing on all cylinders and took the lead early. The set remained close from start to finish but Blackburn held strong, taking the first set by a score of 25-22. The team’s dominance continued in the second set, thanks to a combination of tremendous hitting and blocking which led to a 25-9 Blackburn win. With a chance for a three-set sweep in the third, the Tigers showed life and gave the Beavers a run for their money, taking the set 25-18.

As the teams entered the fourth set, Blackburn came out with a clear goal — finish it. And that they did, taking charge and coming away with a set victory of 25-15 and finishing off the Tigers in four sets, 3-1.

In their second match of the day, the Beavers hoped to carry over the momentum from their first match and go 2-0 on the day against Robert Morris University-Springfield. In the second set of the afternoon match, Blackburn looked to knock off the rust after a shaky first set that resulted in a 25-20 win. The team did just that, asserting their dominance in a 25-13 win. In the third set, the Beavers took the lead from the first point and never looked back. They completed the three-set sweep with a 25-12 win.

The women improved to 6-16 on the season and will be back in action Oct. 24 at 7pm in a home match against Principia.
