The 2018 Netflix original film, “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”, is a heartwarming romantic comedy and an overall amazing movie. This movie was directed by Susan Johnson, starring Lana Condor, Noah Centineo and Israel Broussard. This film features plenty of witty and funny characters, touching family relationships and, of course, plenty of romance. This movie does include some clichés but puts a modern twist on them, and the comedy will make you laugh all the way through to the end. Lara Jean Covey is a junior in high school who has an odd way of coping with her crushes. She has liked five boys throughout her life and she has written a letter expressing her feelings for each one of those boys and hid them in her closet for years.
Lara Jean was the type of girl that fantasized about romance and was often reading romance novels, causing her to have unrealistic expectations of love and relationships. She thought that if it a relationship wasn’t real, it could not hurt her. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the letters were sent to each of the boys she has written about. The five guys are Peter (the most popular guy in school), Kenny (from camp), Lucas (from homecoming), John Ambrose (from Model UN), and Josh (her sister’s boyfriend and her childhood friend).
By the end of the movie, Lara Jean learns to be herself and discovers that, while romance may not be like it is in novels, it is still a wonderful and crazy thing. She also learns that you cannot lie to everyone in your life. Lara Jean lied to her family and friends and ended up hurting them and herself in the process. One of the messages that this film conveys is to be true to yourself and to not be afraid to express yourself and put yourself out there. I thought that the film had an amazing soundtrack and that the casting was perfect. All the characters were relatable and captured moments that everyone has gone through.
