TikTok’s Growing Popularity

by Athena Mata

Everyone knows about TikTok, and many people have accounts, but how much has it really changed entertainment and social media? TikTok is an app to share and create videos of all genres for other people to see, and its popularity has been increasing by the day.

As long as you have the app, you can make videos, post them and see how popular you can become, or you can just make videos for fun. There are even a few Blackburn students who are increasing in popularity as well and trying their hand at becoming TikTok famous.

TikTok has spread to almost every social media through posting and sharing videos on other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. People also send TikToks to their friends and family through text messages. People get together and make TikTok videos together and that includes popular TikTok creators.

Some people are obsessed with learning TikTok dances and recreating them, sometimes with friends. There are even tutorial videos on how to recreate a dance from the app or even on how to make a transitional video for TikTok. Certain things on the app look easy to recreate, but when you actually try it out it ends up being difficult.

There are even ways to earn money through TikTok or advertise a business or brand. TikTok may seem like it is strictly full of cringy, hard-to-watch videos, but there are plenty of businesses that have begun to post videos on the app to advertise and spread the word of their business. For example, The Washington Post, the NBA and Chipotle all have TikTok accounts. That just truly shows how popular TikTok has become, and even big businesses recognize that.

TikTok is trying to become the new Vine, and people have begun to quote videos from the app, much like how people quote Vines. Vine was a similar app to TikTok where users could create and share videos that were six seconds long. Vine came out in 2013 and was very popular for a long time and many people, especially younger individuals, still quote popular Vines to this day.
