Releasing on Feb. 4, 2019 and developed by Respawn Entertainment, “Apex Legends” has recently taken over as the most streamed game on Twitch, garnering over 300,000 viewers at one time. This game, seemingly coming out of nowhere, has blown its competition away. Much like the last biggest fad, “Fortnite”, “Apex Legends” is a battle royale game that drops sixty players in squads of three down to find weapons, battle, and—eventually—become the “Champion.”
As a game whose lore takes place in the “Titanfall” universe, “Apex Legends” does not need any prior knowledge for the lore “Titanfall” since there is no particular story within this battle royale game. With the battle royale market of games saturated by “Players Unknown Battlegrounds” and “Fortnite,” it has been hard to succeed in this area, but “Apex Legends” released with no marketing and became popular overnight.
“Apex Legends” takes mechanics from different games and introduces them into the battle royale genre. It adds a class system in which there are eight different classes with different abilities and ultimate abilities, which can be used after being charged up over time. When starting the game, six of the eight classes are available. The other two can be unlocked through playing the game. While this game is made well, there are some bugs and minute problems. The game’s voice chat can make other players hard to understand with its audio quality. Other times, there will be small issues with queuing up with friends making it difficult, such as the game failing to read a player’s confirmation of being ready for a match or problems regarding loading into a match with friends.
I love playing this game. It’s fun to queue into a game with a couple of friends and play a game after a long day of classes. Since it’s free, there’s also another reason to play: even the average, broke college student can play it as long as they have a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or a computer that can run it. While the game has some kinks to work out, it’s extremely well made for a free battle royale game, which can be expected from its publisher, Electronic Arts. Overall, this is a well made game and I highly suggest it for anyone who’s looking to have a fun time with friends.
