The Disney Empire Strikes Back

Disney has recently announced that they will be releasing a new streaming app called Disney+ in 2019 that will provide Disney movies, TV shows from Disney channel, new original series featuring Disney characters and many exclusive privileges. The app will include movies and tv shows from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and National Geographic.

The app will be similar to Netflix and will create competition between the two apps. There will be a monthly fee to gain access to the latest Disney movies and Disney tv shows, and the company intends for the price to be less expensive than Netflix. Because of the creation of this app, Disney has ended their deal with Netflix and will be taking all of their movies and TV shows off of Netflix at the end of 2018. The chief executive, Bob Iger said in an interview with Quartz about the app, “There’s been a lot written about whether this is aimed at being a Netflix killer, they’ve been a good partner of ours. Our goal here is be a viable player in the direct-to-consumer space, space that we all know is a very, very compelling space to be in.”

The movies and TV shows that will be on Disney+ are the “Star Wars” series, new series based on the character Loki from Marvel, a “High School Musical” series, new 2019 Disney movies and many more. It seems like the company has not decided which Disney shows or movies that were released before the app will be included in the app service. It has not been stated that all previous Disney movies and shows will be included, but the new movies will definitely be on the app.

The app will of course be family friendly but will still provide some of the more mature shows and movies as well. There seem to be varying opinions of the new app from posts on social media, but the app is still in its early stages of production.
