Macoupin County Teaches Art

by Madison Deslaurier

On Saturday Sept. 15, students got to learn how to use various painting techniques such as a dirty pour, puddle pour and line pour. Blackburn students were given the opportunity to show off their creativity at the Macoupin Art Collective (MAC). Most students said that they had never heard of these techniques until they got to watch how they were used. Paints were mixed, poured and splattered on canvases, making it look like cells.

MAC volunteer Kathryn Long taught the students different painting styles. Long stated that she enjoyed having Blackburn students visit and that they are welcome back anytime to take art classes. Long enjoys helping people become better artists and seeing all kinds of beautiful art. Long teaches fairy gardening and helps plan free activities for kids in the community. She has made many sculptures and paintings and continues to explore more art she can make.

MAC Executive Director Brandy Cloud teaches classes and schedules community events. She has been the executive director since the facility opened in Mar. 2017. Cloud teaches pottery, mosaic and stained glass making. “It makes me happy to get to make art every day and I enjoy giving kids free art classes,” said Cloud. Cloud makes cups, bowls and stained glass art.

Not only did students get to create art, but they also got to attend the art fair, meeting artists, eating tasty food and listening to music. Vendors had paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramic bowls and others created by talented artists. Some of the artists even offer art classes to anyone who wants to learn.

Many students had smiles on their faces as they headed back to Blackburn with their paintings. Director of Student Engagement Alondra Olvera had a fun time making art with the students. “I think the MAC event went well. We always have a great time with the MAC and look forward to partnering with them next semester. We go to the MAC once a semester and each time they have something new for the students to do. They have great instructors and are always wonderful with us,” said Olvera.

“Macoupin County Art Collective is in need of volunteers. We have teaching opportunities, data entry tasks and need help with art fairs. We would like to have Blackburn students help us, and it is good job experience,” said Cloud. Those interested may contact her at Office@macart.org.
