The Vortex Wants You

by Ashley Thompson

Blackburn College annually publishes a creative arts magazine called Vortex—a student publication that is designed and created by members of the Production and Publication class, taught by Professor Craig Newsom and Dr. Mark Benedetti. The focus of the magazine is to highlight the Blackburn community’s creative written and art work. Submissions are not just limited to students. Faculty and staff, along with the alumni community, are welcome to submit short stories, poems, creative nonfiction and digital-ready art (digitally created art and scanned art).

English & Communications department chair Dr. Naomi Crummey strongly encouraged the Blackburn community to submit their work to the Vortex this year. Karlee Brimberry, who is a member of the production and publication class, stated, “Overall, the Vortex is so unique. It gives a chance for not only current Blackburn students to show their creative side, but also for faculty, staff and Blackburn alums to as well. Whether that may be through drawings, poetry or short stories, it is great seeing a side to some people that may surprise you.”

The editorial board is in charge of selecting which pieces will be published in this year’s issue. The board is a blind selection panel comprised of students and faculty.

Participants are allowed to submit as many pieces as they’d like for consideration. To submit a piece of writing or art, send your work to enco@blackburm.edu by Monday, Sept. 25. All submissions should contain a name and contact information.
