New Ways to Compete

Director of Student Engagement Alondra Olvera has been tasked with incorporating intramural sports into Campus Activities Board programming. The Campus Activities Board is planning on having at least three or four leagues or tournaments next semester.

Earlier this semester, the Campus Activities Board held a dodgeball tournament as their first intramural event. The whole operation includes student involvement. Olvera wants students to be the referees for most of the events. “I’m here to facilitate the signing up, the background, the preparation. I would really love to see people who are really invested in these games to be the ones refereeing,” she said.

Senior Parker Ramaker enjoyed the opportunity to compete in the dodgeball tournament. “I know the workers do their best to provide us with fun activities. The only downside was there was a worker in the tournament. That could cause a bias problem,” said Ramaker.

Recently, Olvera conducted a survey to attempt to find what sports the students would like to play. “I’ve had a lot of interest in co-ed volleyball, basketball, flag football, soccer and some pickleball. I want to focus mainly on what the students want,” she said.

The reason there were no intramural sports before now simply comes down to who takes responsibility. “Responsibilities change and there was no clear definition as to who was in charge,” said Olvera. These sports fell unnoticed until the Campus Activities Board decided to add them to the program.

Olvera is in the process of starting a website specifically for intramural sports. It will assist in the facilitation of signups. “If you want to see your scores, I can keep track of who has won in the past. It has a really unique feature where it showcases if you’ve won any trophies or games. You have a trophy case and your prizes,” said Olvera.
