Jordan’s Declassified: Athletics Survival Guide

by Jordan Wood

As you will discover early in your Blackburn career, life here can be a lot for one person to handle. As you know, the work program requires all students to work 10 hours per week. In addition to classwork, 10 hours of work a week can be fairly easy for incoming students to stay on top of everything and not fall behind. When you add athletics into the equation, however, every minute becomes crucial and many student athletes struggle to keep up. But participating in both athletics and the work program is possible, and there are several things that a student athlete can do to avoid that slippery slope.

How to get on track and stay on track:

  • Use your B-Book: You will receive this within your first few days on campus and it contains monthly and weekly calendars as well as the school handbook and policies. This gives you easy access to a tool that allows you to keep track of anything from assignment due dates to practice and game schedules.
  • Prioritize and make a schedule: Your B-Book is a good way to keep track of due dates and other important information including games and practices. When you receive an assignment, make sure to write it down so you don’t forget about it. If you have several tasks to finish, make a list and prioritize them in a way that works for you.
  • Get things done early: It can be very easy to put off homework, papers and studying until the day before, and it may work at first. But after awhile, the procrastination will catch up with you. What is the difference between doing it on a Monday when you receive it rather than doing it late on a Thursday night? Most likely, once Thursday approaches, so will other deadlines. Any practices or games scheduled will take additional time away and you will find yourself with an overwhelming list of things you must finish by Friday.

How to get back on track if you fall behind:

  • The biggest piece of advice to getting back on track if you fall behind is to sit and write down everything you have due including your work schedule, sports schedule and any other things that may come up throughout the year. Once you have made the list, organize it based off of the due date. Include work, games and practices to allow yourself to see when you are free. It is important to take it one step at a time and while there may not seem to be enough time, there will be. Just relax, take a deep breath and remember to enjoy your Blackburn career.
